Welcome to City Year’s Basic Training Academy: Your First Step Toward Impact

As a new City Year AmeriCorps member, you’re about to embark on a transformative journey—and it all begins with Basic Training Academy (BTA).

This summer, BTA will prepare you for the meaningful work ahead as a student success coach, equipping you with the tools, knowledge, and community you’ll need to thrive in schools this fall.

“The training was intense, but it gave me the confidence to walk into a classroom and know I belonged there.” — Luis M., City Year Boston

What is BTA?

BTA is City Year’s immersive onboarding experience.

Over several weeks, you’ll dive into training sessions focused on student engagement, youth development, classroom management, and the ABCs of student success: Attendance, Behavior, and Course performance.

You’ll also start to build strong bonds with your team and learn how to support 91 both academically and interpersonally, so they can reach their full potential.

“BTA was where I found my ‘why.’ It helped me understand the impact I could have—not just as a tutor, but as a mentor and advocate for my 91.” — Jasmine R., City Year Los Angeles alum

What to Expect

  • Hands-on Learning: From role-playing classroom scenarios to practicing restorative justice techniques, BTA is designed to be interactive and practical.
  • Community Building: You’ll meet fellow corps members from across the country, forming a support network that often lasts well beyond your service year.
  • Mission-Driven Mindset: You’ll explore City Year’s values and the power of near-peer mentorship in addressing educational inequity.

Get Ready to Serve

As you prepare for BTA, come with an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to growth. This summer is just the beginning of a year that will challenge you, change you, and leave a lasting impact on the 91 you serve.

“I didn’t expect to grow so much personally during BTA. It’s where I learned to lead with empathy and purpose.” — Taylor S., City Year Jacksonville
