”After coming back from a restful and well-deserved Thanksgiving break, it quickly became clear to my partner teacher and I that the time in between holiday breaks would be extra challenging in terms of student engagement. To help keep our 91���� motivated and ensure we finish the year strong, my partner teacher and I introduced the 12 Days of Christmas. This initiative consists of highlighting 91���� who are going above and beyond in their participation and performance, for the 12 school days before winter break. Students of the Day earn small prizes such as fun pencils, erasers, stickers, etc. for their hard work. Additionally, whoever gets chosen to be Student of the Day, helps the teachers in recommending their peers for the following day.”

Congratulations to CYSA’s Chief of Staff, Stephanie Gargiulo!

Stephanie was one of 18 individuals selected as a 2021 NLC Fellow in San Antonio and one of 866 leaders around the country for this program.

We are thrilled to welcome Barbara Williams to our board!

Barbara is a wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and aunt to an amazing family. In her 35 years as an educator, Barbara taught fourth grade through high school, was Associate Headmaster and teacher at San Antonio Academy, and was principal of Buckner Fanning School at Mission Springs while also teaching classes. Many of her former 91���� keep in touch with her, which has brought great joy to Barbara and her husband George through the years.

For many years, Barbara has directed her spare time toward those ill-equipped to live unassisted. In 2019, Barbara chaired the Power of Women Luncheon for City Year San Antonio, helping to raise more than $150,000 in funding to support the work of City Year AmeriCorps members in San Antonio schools. In addition to her dedication to City Year and the special needs community, Barbara is committed to Impact San Antonio, where she served on the Board from 2017-2019. Barbara also holds a leadership position on the Blessed Sacrament Academy Council, and she is involved in a number of ministries and leads a Sunday school class at First Baptist Church. Barbara and George are native San Antonians and have lived in this community for 82 years.

Join CYSA in welcoming Courtney Wai to our board!

Courtney Wai is a lifelong educator and learner. She currently teaches middle school English as a Second Language (ESL) at Ball Academy in San Antonio ISD and is an adjunct professor for Relay Graduate School of Education. Previously, she worked as the Learning & Development Director for City Year San Antonio. She was also the Special Projects Manager for the City of San Antonio’s Office of Equity, where she worked with City departments to advance racial equity and partnered with other community organizations to advance the goals of the Office.
